Warrick Stock was shot by a man with dreadlocked hair in the middle of the day, police say.

A popular South African radio and club DJ has been murdered in the nation's economic hub Johannesburg, sending shockwaves across a country battling persistent crime.

Warrick Stock, who went by the name DJ Warras, was shot and killed in the central business district on the afternoon of Tuesday.

Authorities reported the 40-year-old presenter was accosted by a trio of assailants, with one shot at him before fleeing on foot.

The motive of the attack remains unclear and no suspects have been apprehended have been made, police said.

Details of the Attack

Law enforcement said that Stock was targeted as he was exiting a premises near the city center landmark.

He had spent several hours at the property managing the installation of security systems, which had been reportedly taken over by squatters, as per local media.

"It is alleged the victim was approached by three unidentified men after parking his vehicle, and they began shooting at him before escaping on foot," authorities said.

Surveillance tape reportedly captured a man with dreadlocks and clad in what resembled a protective services outfit shooting on Stock before making his escape.

The DJ attempted to flee after he was shot but fell down on the opposite side of the road.

Officials noted that Stock had an weapon on his person and nothing was taken during the attack.

Important clues, like cartridges, were recovered from the location.

Investigation Ongoing

Officials are asking members of the public who may have witnessed the attack to come forward.

"Evidence suggests they traveled on foot after the attack, and investigators have been tracking them to find their destination," added an official.

Outpouring of Grief

His sister, a close relative, stated the loved ones are reeling to process his death.

"I am devastated. I don't have words," were her words.
"We know he was a representative for countless citizens. He was a fearless commentator about subjects not many people were willing to tackle. This is a profound tragedy."

She requested the citizens to avoid sharing disturbing footage from the incident, explaining this was an extremely painful time, particularly for Stock's young family.

A Multifaceted Career

Stock was the presenter of Ngicel' iVisa, a series that aired on a popular local digital satellite entertainment channel.

Apart from his role as a presenter, Stock was active in various commercial activities, including security provision, providing VIP protection services and managing safety for prestigious gatherings across South Africa.

He was also reportedly involved in real estate operations and was involved in tenant removals.

His killing has shocked the country and prompted an wave of remembrances from his followers, the authorities and various organizations.

A government minister said he was furious and grief-stricken by Stock's killing.

"He expressed his views boldly and honestly. He even spoke up against me and my decisions as a public official. He was a pure example of who we must aspire to be," he stated.

A party figurehead commented the "brazen murder of DJ Warras in the middle of the day is a shock for all South Africans".

A broadcasting director noted that "Stock was not merely a face of a reality series. He was a skilled narrator, a dedicated enthusiast of music and a generous spirit who brought joy and energy to every appearance. His artistic passion left an indefinable mark."

In a communication, the network he worked for affirmed Stock was known for his presence, approachability and intelligent commentary, adding that his memory "will live on".
